General Hiring Process FAQs
- How do I apply for a job with the Cook County Assessor’s Office (CCAO)?
All applications must be submitted electronically through the CCAO career website. Only completed and submitted applications will be considered.
- Why are there questions included at the end of the application?
Some of these questions are disqualifying questions and pertain to the minimum qualifications for the position. If you answer “no” to a disqualifying question, you will not be considered for the position. There may be other questions which pertain to the preferred qualifications for the position. If you answer “no” to a question regarding a preferred qualification you will still be considered if you meet the minimum qualifications.
- Can I apply for multiple positions at the CCAO?
Yes, however you must submit a separate application for each position.
- What happens if I forget to include the required documents with my application?
Applicants must submit all required documents listed in the Notice of Job Opportunity in order to be considered for the position. Please read the Notice of Job Opportunity closely and in its entirety before applying for any position.
- What happens after I submit my application documents?
Applications, resumes, and other requested documents are reviewed and validated to determine if you meet the minimum qualifications and preferred qualifications, if applicable. Your application documents must reflect how you meet these qualifications. You will be contacted by a Human Resources representative if you are selected for an interview.
- What happens if I am late for my interview?
Candidates have a 15-minute grace period from the scheduled start of the interview unless there are exigent circumstances. Interviews are typically conducted virtually via Teams.
- Do I need to describe what I do on the application materials or at the interview?
You will be expected to submit a complete application outlining your experience, skills and abilities. You will also be expected to articulate your suitability for that position during your interview.
- I meet all of the minimum qualifications and preferred qualifications. Why wasn’t I selected for an interview?
The CCAO’s hiring practices are designed to be fair and transparent. In addition to validating application materials we also randomize applicants. An interview will be offered to applicants based on the outcome of the randomization and validation processes.
- What can I expect if I am selected for an interview?
The CCAO conducts “structured interviews” with three (3) interviewer panelists. All candidates are asked the same questions in the same order with follow-up questions, if applicable. Interviews may be monitored by the Compliance department to ensure compliance with the CCAO’s Employment Plan.

Criminal Background Check Policy
In an ongoing effort to provide a safer and more secure working environment, we are pleased to announce that HR will begin conducting criminal background checks on prospective employees. Effective August 1, 2025, the Background Check Policy will go into effect.
