The Cook County Assessor’s Office brought together community leaders for a discussion of history, affordable housing, and advocacy in Chicago’s AAPI community as part of its ongoing “Racial Equity and Real Estate Conversations” series.

The conversation was moderated by Cook County Assessor Fritz Kaegi at Maria’s Packaged Goods and Community Bar in Bridgeport on May 28.

Panelists included 11th Ward Alderwoman Nicole Lee; Grace Chan McKibben, Executive Director of the Coalition for a Better Chinese American Community; Tommy Choi, co-founder of Weinberg Choi Residential; and Kashyap Trivedi, partner at Trivedi & Khan, PC.

The discussion ranged from the history of the Chinese-American community in Chinatown and Bridgeport – as well as Chicago’s first Chinatown in the Loop – to issues of affordability and housing supply across the city and suburbs.

After the discussion, Cleo Aquino, co-founder of Mahjong Chicago LLC, led a demo showing attendees how to play mahjong.
